Campaign to Ban Red Dye #3

The BVI Cancer Society (BVICS) is proud to launch its campaign to ban Red Dye #3—a synthetic food coloring that poses significant health risks. This campaign is a call to action for the community, policymakers, and businesses to prioritize public health and take a stand against this harmful additive.

What is Red Dye #3?

Red Dye #3, also known as Erythrosine, is a synthetic food coloring commonly used in candies, baked goods, beverages, and even medications. While it gives products their bright red color, its risks far outweigh its benefits. Studies have linked Red Dye #3 to:

  • Increased cancer risk: Scientific research has shown that high doses of Red Dye #3 cause tumors in lab animals, particularly affecting the thyroid.
  • Endocrine disruption: The dye has been shown to interfere with normal hormonal functions.
  • Hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children: Red Dye #3 is known to trigger hyperactivity and other behavioral concerns in children, particularly those with ADHD.

The Health Impact in the BVI

In the British Virgin Islands, where non-communicable diseases such as cancer are a growing concern, we cannot afford to ignore the risks posed by harmful chemicals in our food supply. As a community dedicated to health and wellness, it is our responsibility to protect future generation

  • Cancer rates: With cancer affecting countless families in the BVI, removing known carcinogens from our diets is a vital step in reducing this burden.
  • Children’s health: Our children deserve to grow up in an environment free from preventable health risks, including those linked to Red Dye #3.

Our Goals

  1. Legislative Action: Work with the BVI government to implement a full ban on Red Dye #3 in food, drinks, and medications sold in the territory.
  2. Consumer Awareness: Educate the public on the dangers of Red Dye #3 and empower them to make healthier choices.
